21 terms, explained plainly. Where a term has a legal meaning we say which law; where it has a company-specific meaning we say to check the plan.

  • Back office

    The participant's online portal for orders, genealogy, commissions and reports; often a paid subscription.

C

  • Cold market

    Strangers reached through advertising, social media or approaches in public.

  • Convention

    A company's annual event, typically ticketed, with training, recognition and product launches.

  • Cross-line recruiting

    Recruiting a participant who is already in another leg or another sponsor's organisation.

  • Customer-first

    Building a direct selling business on retail customers before recruiting anyone.

  • Daily method of operation (DMO)

    A fixed daily routine of contacts, follow-ups and presentations a participant commits to.

  • Due diligence

    The checks to make before joining: product, plan, costs, disclosure, policies and the people.

  • Duplication

    The idea that success comes from teaching recruits to do exactly what you did.

  • Follow-up

    The scheduled contact after a presentation or sample, to ask for a decision.

  • Funnel

    An automated sequence of pages and messages that moves a prospect from first contact to sign-up.

  • Gamification

    Using ranks, badges, streaks and leaderboards to drive participant activity.

  • Lead generation

    Buying or producing lists of potential recruits or customers.

  • Opportunity meeting

    A presentation, in person or online, that introduces the products and the compensation plan to prospects.

  • Prospecting

    Identifying and approaching potential customers or recruits.

R

  • Recognition

    Public acknowledgement of rank or sales achievements, on stage or online.

  • Recruitment

    Bringing new participants into the plan under one's sponsorship.

S

  • Stacking

    Placing recruits in a line under each other rather than side by side to qualify legs or ranks.

  • System

    A packaged training programme, often sold separately, that teaches a duplicable method.

T

  • Three-way call

    A call where a new participant brings a prospect to their upline to close the sale or recruitment.

  • Tools income

    Income top leaders earn from selling training materials and events to their own downline.

W

  • Warm market

    Friends, family and acquaintances approached as customers or recruits.
