Merchant of record
The legal seller in a transaction, responsible for payment, tax and refunds.
In most direct selling companies the company is the merchant of record: the customer's card is charged by the company, which handles VAT or sales tax and refunds, and the participant is paid a commission. In older models the participant bought inventory and resold it, taking on the merchant role themselves.
